Opening on May 11, 2013, GateKeeper is a massive steel wing coaster that serves as the literal “gatekeeper” of the park, flying directly over the main entrance. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the ride replaced the defunct Disaster Transport and Space Spiral, becoming the centerpiece of a brand-new $30 million entry plaza. As a wing coaster, the trains seat riders in pairs on either side of the track with nothing above or below them, simulating the sensation of flight. The experience begins with a 170-foot lift hill and a unique “Wing Over” drop—a 180-degree inversion that was the highest in the world at the time of its debut. Reaching speeds of 67 mph, the coaster famously threads through two “keyhole” towers above the front gates, providing a signature near-miss element before concluding with a series of six inversions and a 360-degree spiral.
