Opening on May 6, 1989, Magnum XL-200 is one of the most significant roller coasters in history, famously debuting as the world’s first “hypercoaster”—a term coined specifically for a complete-circuit coaster exceeding 200 feet in height. Designed by Ron Toomer and manufactured by Arrow Dynamics, the ride stands 205 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 72 mph. Its debut sparked the global “roller coaster wars,” a decades-long competition among parks to build the tallest and fastest attractions. The experience features a massive 195-foot drop followed by a series of high-speed airtime hills, a signature “pretzel turnaround” near the Lake Erie shoreline, and three dark tunnels. Despite its age and the “bumpy” transitions characteristic of hand-welded Arrow track, it remains a fan favorite and was designated an ACE Roller Coaster Landmark in 2004 for its historical impact on the industry.
