Opening on May 9, 2015, Rougarou is Cedar Point’s first floorless roller coaster, though its history at the park dates back much further. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the ride originally debuted on May 11, 1996, as Mantis, which at the time was the tallest (145 feet), fastest (60 mph), and longest stand-up roller coaster in the world. After nearly two decades of “stand-up” thrills and a reputation for being a bit rough on the legs, the ride closed in 2014 to undergo a $12 million transformation. It reopened the following season with a swampy orange and blue color scheme and new floorless trains that allow riders’ feet to dangle just inches above the track. Named after a terrifying werewolf-like creature from French folklore, the ride follows its original 3,900-foot layout, featuring four inversions—including a 119-foot vertical loop and a rare inclined loop—all while weaving over the park’s central lagoon.
