Opening on April 4, 1997, Chang was the massive steel stand-up coaster that put Kentucky Kingdom on the global map, shattering multiple world records upon its debut. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard for a then-staggering $12 million, it was the tallest, fastest, and longest stand-up coaster in the world, famously featuring the world’s largest vertical loop (121 feet) and a total of five inversions. Its name, which means “long” in Mandarin Chinese, reflected its massive 4,155-foot layout. Throughout its tenure at the park, it saw two major color changes: it debuted with yellow track and supports, was repainted to lime green and violet in 1999 under Six Flags management, and finally returned to a yellow and blue scheme in 2006. Despite being the park’s flagship attraction, Chang was closed on September 19, 2009, and dismantled to make room for a water park expansion that never fully materialized before Six Flags abandoned the property. The coaster was eventually relocated to Six Flags Great Adventure, where it operated as Green Lantern from 2011 until its permanent closure in late 2024.
