Originally debuting at Marriott’s Great America in 1978 as Tidal Wave, Greezed Lightnin’ arrived at Kentucky Kingdom in 2003 after a stint at Six Flags Over Georgia as Viper. This classic Schwarzkopf shuttle loop was famous for its mechanical weight-drop launch, which catapulted riders from 0 to 57 mph in six seconds into a massive 76-foot vertical loop and up a 138-foot dead-end spike, only to repeat the entire experience backward. Despite its status as a cult favorite, the ride closed along with the park in 2009 under Six Flags management and was ultimately deemed too costly to refurbish for the park’s 2014 reopening. It was dismantled in 2013, though its legacy lives on as the current Lightning Run utilizes the original Greezed Lightnin’ station building and occupies its former footprint.
