Opening on May 24, 2014, as the signature attraction for the park’s grand reopening, Lightning Run is a one-of-a-kind steel coaster that serves as a high-intensity “welcome back” to the Kingdom. Manufactured by Chance Rides, it remains the only Hyper GT-X model in the world, designed specifically to deliver the punch of a massive hypercoaster within a compact 100-foot-tall footprint. The ride occupies the former site of the iconic Greezed Lightnin’ and begins with a steep 80-degree drop, propelling the train to a top speed of 55 mph. Over 2,500 feet of track, riders experience ten rapid-fire airtime moments and tight, overbanked turns that have made it a favorite among enthusiasts for its aggressive pacing and smooth, lap-bar-only restraints. Despite its relatively modest height, its “pure airtime” design allows it to hold its own against much larger coasters, signaling a bold new era for the park under the management of Ed Hart.
