Anchoring the top-secret Area 72 research compound, Orion debuted in 2020 as the tallest, fastest, and longest steel roller coaster in Kings Island’s history. As one of only seven “giga coasters” in the world—a rare class of coasters featuring a height or drop between 300 and 399 feet—Orion sends “volunteer” riders on a high-stakes mission to escape a meteor storm. The experience begins with a massive 287-foot lift hill followed by a harrowing 300-foot drop at an 85-degree angle, propelling the train to a top speed of 91 mph. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the ride is celebrated for its smooth, high-speed maneuvers and significant “airtime” as it navigates 5,321 feet of track, including a massive 202-foot horseshoe turn and a high-speed “ampersand” helix. Its placement on the former site of Firehawk and its immersive space-research theme make it a centerpiece of the park’s modern skyline.
