Dominating the Coney Mall midway since the park’s opening day on April 29, 1972, The Racer is a historic twin-track wooden roller coaster widely credited with sparking the “second golden age” of roller coasters. Designed by the legendary John C. Allen, this classic out-and-back coaster features two trains—Red and Blue—that race side-by-side over 3,415 feet of track, reaching speeds of 53 mph across a series of airtime-filled hills. The ride gained national fame after being featured in the 1973 The Brady Bunch episode “The Cincinnati Kids” and remains the most-ridden attraction in the park’s history with over 107 million rides given. For a significant part of its history (1982–2007), one side of the coaster famously ran backward, though today both sides have been restored to their original forward-facing orientation. Recently refurbished with its classic red, white, and blue paint scheme for the park’s 50th anniversary, The Racer remains an American Coaster Enthusiasts (ACE) Landmark and a nostalgic must-ride for generations of fans.
