Opening on April 11, 1987, Vortex was a massive steel multi-element coaster that fundamentally changed the Kings Island skyline for over three decades. Built by Arrow Dynamics on the former site of the original Bat, it famously reused the existing station and utilized the park’s natural terrain to enhance its 148-foot drop. At the time of its debut, it was the first roller coaster in the world to feature six inversions—including two vertical loops, two corkscrews, and a signature “batwing” element. Reaching speeds of 55 mph, the ride was known for its dramatic “thinner” track profile and its striking navy blue and orange color scheme. After giving more than 46 million rides, Vortex reached the end of its service life and officially closed on October 27, 2019. While the plot of land in Coney Mall remains vacant as of early 2026, the ride’s iconic station and concrete footings still stand as a tribute to one of the most photographed attractions in the park’s history.
