Space Mountain is a landmark steel indoor roller coaster in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom, recognized as the world’s first coaster to be governed by a computer-based control system. Originally opened in 1975, the attraction features a dual-track layout—Alpha and Omega—housed within a 183-foot-tall futuristic concrete dome. Manufactured by Arrow Development, the ride utilizes unique 6-passenger trains where riders sit in a single-file, inline configuration, navigating a series of sharp turns and sudden drops in near-total darkness. While the maximum speed is relatively low at 27 mph, the lack of visual cues and the “Starry-O-Phonic” sound effects are designed to simulate the sensation of high-speed space flight. The ride has a minimum height requirement of 44 inches and remains one of the park’s highest-demand attractions, utilizing both the standby line and Lightning Lane Multi Pass.
